My grandmother Connie was born in Mansfield, Victoria, Australia on the 28th December, 1914. When I knew her she lived in Western Queensland, and she spent much of her time baking yummy goodies all in the name of morning and afternoon tea - "Smoko." Connie played golf and bowls, she was the president of the Meandarra Bowls Club, Meandarra Geranium Club and Secretary of the Meandarra RSL for over 20 years. She was married to Joe, a cattle grazier. They had 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. She left us earth side on the 5th October, 2000.
I have wonderful memories of baking with Gran. We would have two ovens going - the old wood stove, and the free standing electric oven. We would have Gran's slice and scones in the ovens, cornflake crunch toffee slice setting in the fridge, and we'd make Jatz with cream cheese and sliced tomato on top. All of this was served up for smoko, when those that had been working down the paddock would return to the homestead for a cup of tea and nourishment. Afternoons were often wiled away reading Archie comics and Footrot Flats in the breezeway, or playing solitaire the old fashioned way with an actual deck of cards. Looking out at the cattle grazing in the paddock, endless horizons and magical sunsets. In this photo my grandmother Connie is on the left, and we think that may be her cousin on the right. Connie is wearing a side- saddle skirt.

Arthur, Connie and Athalie
This is Connie on her wedding day. The man on her left is her brother, Arthur. The lady on her right is her sister, Athalie. Connie and Joe married on the 21st January, 1946. Connie and Joe married after the second world war, times were tough and Joe had spent 14 months in hospital with severe burns. He had been home from the war on leave when he was involved in a nasty accident on the family farm which ultimately took the life of his father, after Joe carried him many miles for help. Poppa Joe had lots of scars, not just from the burns but also from where skin grafts had been taken. He was a very brave man that lived a lot of his life in silent pain. I loved staying at the farm with Gran and Poppa, many happy childhood memories!!
